Here are the results of the quick test I was able to perform today. Not really controlled environment.

Two series of pictures at 2 different light levels. Matrix metering, D7100+24-120 F4. Indoors with light coming from a big window on the right. Subject is ~10 feet from the camera. Handheld.

In the first series (see captures below), the first picture (no flash) comes out underexposed (at ISO 500), so I added exposure with +1 EV (picture #2), which caused ISO to go up to 1000. As you can see, build in flash (image #3) already boosts ISO, while SB400 and SB 900 keep it at 400 (images #4 and #5).

#1, No flash, 1/125, F4, ISO 500

#2. No flash. 1/125, F4, ISO 1000, +1 EV.

#3. Built-in flash, 1/125, F4, ISO 450

#4. SB400. 1/125, F4, ISO 400

#5, SB 900. 1/125, F4, ISO 400
