If you are taking a portrait with the camera in portrait mode using an outer single direction autofocus sensor sometimes an eye is not a good enough autofocus target for autofocus to be reliable.

Is your problem is with the camera in portrait mode see if you get better results with the camera in landscape mode.

If your camera and the lens focus good on most subjects at 70 mm it is a fairly safe bet that the problem is the camera cannot focus accurately on the subjects eye.

When this problem happens the Nikon guidance is to consider manual focus - which is often not practicable with a fast moving child.

If recent Nikon bodies had some more efficient cross type autofocus sensors (many Canon bodies do) I believe fewer would report problems similar to yours.

Many problems turn out to be a lack of intimate knowledge of complex modern camera equipment.
