For portraits we have 85mm f1.4 lenses.  Or, if you want something smaller and lighter, there is the 85mm f1.8 lens.

Or you could use a 70-200 f2.8 lens.  That does pass through 85mm, you know.

70mm is too short for what?

Better define versatile.
