If you need to get faster than 2.8, you're going to be shooting primes; as far as I know, there are no zooms faster than 2.8 for APS-C.  If you need it badly enough, you could go full frame; 2.8 is still the fastest zoom you can get, but you're gaining  a stop and a half with the sensor.
