Mike, I'm sorry to hear about this. I'd immediately cease all correspondence with the buyer. Threating to sue is ridiculous given your offer to have the lens checked.

IF you do decide to accept it back, you need to have the buyer pay for the return. Don't issue a refund until you are satisfied that the merchandise was returned in the same condition as when sent. But you'll be taking a huge risk in accepting it as a return.

Because the amount in question for damages is small this issue would be more likely to be handled in a small claims court. Attorney fees would far outweigh the value. Even if you visit an attorney and the first visit is generally free, they aren't going to tell you how to remedy the situation without you paying them to do such. They listen, you pay, they fix. But not always.
