It's one of my favorites for portraits. It depends on taste, but I prefer the shorter focal lengths because they make for more intimate portraits with less flattening. Brian Smith who hangs out on these forums and also happens to be a rather good (read Pulitzer prize-winning) portrait photographer also has a soft spot for short portrait lenses.

It's not good for everything though, but there's a medium telephoto coming and if Sony get it right (and they have a good track record here) it will complement the 50mm quite nicely for those times when you want to flatten the features, or heavily blur the background.
