If we avoided everything we didn't understand we would still be living in caves and hunting with pointy sticks. I think it would be much better advise to say that if you don't understand something you should spend the time learning about it and practising.

f/2.8 is a smaller number than f/22 in the same way that 100 is a smaller number than 20.
