You can of course shoot Raw plus Jpeg, and the Jpeg will be saved as cropped and resized -- the Raw file will be saved as the uncropped version.

Thanks for the quick reply! I'll test it out with raw + jpeg then.

When I tried it out last summer, my initial reaction was that the jpegs were excellent. Then I enlarged them and found that they incorporated sharpening (slight halos) that the RAW doesn't.

A quick test should confirm it to your taste. Remember using it for distant subjects may improve both focussing and exposure measurement. (Though I'm not certain that the exposure is based on the smaller area.)
