70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon   I am told that this will also double up as a macro 1:1 lens, and will give me plenty of length for those wild life shots.

No, it will not double as macro. If you go to that page to "Specification" tab, there is:

Minimum Focus Distance 4.59' (1.40 m)

Magnification 0.125x

Maximum Reproduction Ratio 1:8

So it is not a macro lens at all. Some previous versions of Sigma 70-200/2.8 could double as macro lenses, but not this one.

Here I found it: this older Sigma has a sort of macro at 0.29 magnification, but no 1:1. It lacks optical stabilization compared to newer ones:
