I agree with the guys above.

Generally what I see in reviews are that non-Nikon lenses don't seem to do as well in very low light as the Nikon-brand lenses do, but I haven't hard of any compatibility issues out there.  I think that is Ken Rockwell FUD.

I own the Tokina 11-16, and it is a terrific lens IMHO.  Haven't used the Sigma, but generally I don't trust them.  I see enough comments on forums to believe they have sample variation issues (though everyone seems to love them if they do get serviced - people always comment that they come back really sharp.  That is an opinion generated without any data at all FWIW.

As for focal lengths, people seem to like 17-50 lenses, but my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is my go-to lens.  I like my 35 f/1.8 a lot, too.
