I've had the Manfrotto 055 series both in aluminum and CF and had issues with each ........over time the leg tubes felt gritty and the leg lock levers were a joke, not to mention their ball heads that drooped even using the 70-200/2.8IS.

I bit the bullet and bought the Gitzo with non-rotational CF legs and twist leg locks.....smoooooth ....and very stable for under $500. The Markins Q20LR ball head only adds to the stability and fluid operation....

Come on, comparing a Manfrotto 055 to Gitzo 2531? , talking about ballheads, I would say stay away from both Manfotto and Gitzo and look into at least a Markins for those if in tight budget, and even better try the RRS legs and heads, then you will understand why they are expensive, quality product is never cheap, some people consider them "over price" but I think they worth every penny.
