You are looking at two factors here, the size of the light source and the contrast of the light source.

Large lights can be used to create a higher contrast lighting, as routinely seen on movie sets.

Likewise, small lights can be fairly softened, as in jewelry photography.

The distinction is important in how you approach lighting.

No shot is made great by it's Shadow Edge Transfer.

The effect of more contrast in a light is to increase the specular highlights, as noted in the Blog Link.
