I am very similar to you in my shooting taste.

I waited and waited for a D400 but gave up and bought a D800. Together with my D300s I am covered for frame rates etc.

I did consider the D4 but came to the conclusion that the only real gain would be the high frame rate. Not worth the considerable extra costs.

Thought I would miss the reach of the D300s but the cropping factor on the D800 with very little loss of quality has worked very well.

I still have DX mode on the D800 which has a higher resolution than the D300s.

I often use remote flashes for insect macro shots. The D4 does not have on board flash but the D800 does.

So far the low frame rate of the D800 has not caused me any problems for birds in flight etc as the High ISO capability enables me to keep the shutter speed high.

Go for the D800.
