I have had no problem getting flare on this lens.  See below.  Other than that I like the results a lot, after a shoot on Saturday.  After all I only very rarely shoot with the sun in the frame.  Focus is SLOW and hunts more than any other lens I have.

Just curious: did you have a filter on the lens when you took these images? Also, what was the f/stop you used (no Exif in the 2 pictures you posted)? I posted in this thread a picture with the sun in the frame, shot at 18mm and wide open (f/3.5) and I can't see any flare at all.

Finally which camera are you using? Asking that because with my D600 focus is very fast and doesn't hunt at all.

Not doubting about the issues you are stating, just trying to see if these might be caused by a combination of factors (filter, f/stop, etc) or if it is QC variation. I recently went through the hassle of exchanging a faulty Nikon 28mm G lens and the new copy is so much better that I couldn't believe it was the same model.

No filters were used.

The first photo is 21mm f14.

The second photo is 20mm f8.

This is with a D600.  Focus speed in broad daylight, like in these pictures, is of course accurate with no hunting.  Although speed is not fast compared to every other lens I use (80-200 2 ring, Tam 28-75, 50 1.8g, Tok 100mm macro, 28-300).  It probably roughly the same speed as the macro and slower than the rest.  Again, for me, a wide angle is not about speed, so no problem there.

My small issue is in lower light, not even dark.  The lens seems to hunt more than expected.  Again, not a big deal for me, but worth mentioning.  I have never had a Nikkor (even the lowely old 18-55 in my D40 days) that hunts like this.  Also, keep in mind this is just from one day of shooting, but I have never had it happen before.

For instance the photo below was inside one of the barns, not exactly super dark, but certainly not bright.  There was some hunting that required the lens to rack back and forth from min focus distance to infinity at least once.  Focus point was on the diagonal pipe in the foreground.  Granted this is pretty low contrast, but again, never had this happen with any other Nikkors.  Shutter speed was in the neighborhood of 1/3sec, iso 100, f8, 18mm.

In review, I like this lens.  I will not be returning it.  But I will be curious to try it out more in low light.

John
