lensrentals.com 80-400 v 70200+2XTC test : is the 80-400 really worth it?

Here's lensrentals.com's MTF50 numbers at 40 feet, both lenses 400mm f/5.6, body is D800:

________________________Center MTF50  Avg MTF50  Avg. Corner MTF50

Nikon 80-400 AF-S                           820      675                480

Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 with 2X                600      560                440

I would venture a guess, simply mutiplying the number by 1.4, the deduced resolution numbers seem to be pretty close to reality:

[deduced] 70-200 f/2.8 VR2 + TC14  840     784                 616

[deduced] 70-200 f/2.8 VR2 bare     1176     1097.6            862.4

The common opinion is the 70-200VR2 numbers would likely get worse if subject distance goes further, and likely get better as it get closer to MFD. The 70-200VR2 + TC14 would likely be better than the new 80-400 in the overlapping range.

While 80-400 AF-S numbers are better... is it worth another $2700 for those who already own the 70-200VR2+TC20E3 combo? There's really a lot of food for thought here.

I own both of them at this point. The 80-400 AF-S is way nicer as a handheld lens. The VR works well and nano-coating is something neither the old 80-400, bigma nor the 70-300VR have. It is a great lens nevertheless. But $2700? Perhaps $2000-2200 or so is more likely the "fair market value" of this lens. despite the focal range it's not really in the same league as the 70-200VR2.
