If maintaining highlight detail in the flower itself is the point I don't think it is a horrible exposure, although I don't really get the settings used.  Drop the ISO and shutter speed?

The second shot "snaps up" nicely with thirty seconds of levels adjustment.

"Snap", "pop", or even "crackle" are a matter of internal settings OR good editing.  If these two were shot in the RAW the first one should be pretty easily adjusted within reason and the second one will pop like a firecracker if you want it to.
