All of these are not far from a perch, so the adjustment to the focus was relatively small, and could, to some extent, be practiced beforehand.  Following the bird is indeed hard.  Persistence helps - I've been trying for a long time to get a good shot of a kingfisher hovering.  It helps a lot that I'm using the lens handheld, and can let the superb IBIS of the EM5 keep the subject sharp. It's hard to imagine following a kingfisher with a monopod or tripod and it's also hard to imagine (till now)getting a sharp result from a handheld 700mm equivalent.
