I recommend the cheapest 4 TB external for TimeMachine, even USB 2.0 will work. Then use TimeMachineEditor to make only one backup per day. My backup happens 2:00 AM. That way I am not interrupted by HD activity when I work.

For your photo backups, get a thunderbird or USB 3 if you need to access the files on that drive. If not get something modular, speed won't matter. I use internal drives that I connect to an adapter. Perfect for offsite backups too, store the drive in another building such as at work.
