An interesting statement, Reilly.  In the D80 era, I would have said ISO 400, and there were solid bulk sensor differences that drove that choice. But it seems that your initial comments contradict your last sentence; even though the D7000 and D7100 are 2-3 stops better after NR and downsizing to D90 resolutions, it still would not be appropriate to raise ISO higher than 800?
