First thing I would do is stop comparing the D7100 to the D90 at 100%. The 7100 is yielding much more resolution out of same size sensor, so any improvement at a per pixel level is a pretty big deal. View the 7100 image on the screen at 50% compared to the D90 at 100% and improvement will be much more noticeable. Second thing is to play with JPEG processing settings if you are determined to not have to do a lot of post processing work. If you want more high ISO noise reduction, turn it up. You will get smoother tones, just know it will come at the price of softening the image, but once again, with all the resolution the 7100 has, that probably will only matter if you are pixel peeping at 100%.
