WELL...I was little slow to grasp it.

Shooting with a D700 for several years, I didn't really appreciate the difference the increased resolution of the D800 was making in this aspect - until now.

And, yes, as another poster pointed out..."shimmer" is nothing new. But, before 36mp, it was really only an issue at EXTREMELY LONG distances. More distance = more turbulence the image is passing through. NOW, we're resolving this turbulence at shorter distances. It doesn't have to "build up" as much before we notice it!
