How long does a lens have to be, to be an issue for a Tripod?

Sorry if I missed that! What do you have in mind the use of your new DSLR system? Sport? Birds? It may help others to get you the right advise.

For birds, 300mm (450mm in DX) may not be enough, for sport, anything less then f2.8 is also very limited. You will also need a Wimberley head for both!

I had a 70-300mm long time ago that I have not use a single time over the 15 years of ownership. I pass it on to my friend 3 years ago and I don't missed it a single bit. Lens more then 200mm are so specialized that you have to have a specific use to warrant getting one.
