Note I used to write backup strategies for large companies, so it's something I know something about.

This strategy addresses just about every conceivable risk in the simplest possible way for a home user using the least number of individual measures and the lowest outlay. It also minimises your recovery time, assuming you can lay your hands on a handy backup PC for a while as you recover your main system.

If you wanted belt and braces, you could go for RAID mirroring as well, but I may need that last drive bay when I run out of space again and it does not increase resilience all that much if your backup strategy is right.
