I tried to focus on the eye, but the beak doesn't look terrinly sharp. Taken with my 18-105mm lens on Aperture Priority.

Either the lens has some front focusing going on, or else the camera decided to focus on the wing (which is relatively sharper) instead of the eye. Also, for anything as twitchy as a bird, you probably want to get that shutter speed up much higher to avoid any motion blur, though that doesn't appear to be a factor in this particular shot. 1/15 s is quite slow for moving subjects.

Thank you. I had my camera on Aperture instead of Shutter. I find manual mode difficult. I'll keep trying.

I find manual mode combined with auto ISO very useful for birds with long lens. Then the camera will change ISO to get right exposure. This mode is just as easy like A or S.

Manual without auto ISO is harder because then you have to change settings whenever light is changing.

Oh thanks for this tip.  I'll give it a try.
