People generally don't worry about radiation because they can not see it, do not understand it, and can't even tell you the difference between contamination and radiation.

Contamination is made up of solid radioactive particles. These particles emit radiation that can cause biological damage to people.

The relevant aspect of rad contamination is having it where you don't want it.

There is also one very good component of radiation in comparison to other hazards and that is it's generally pretty easy to detect.  I don't have concerns about contamination of Japanese manufactured cameras but if I lived there, I might be uncomfortable about the potential of food being contaminated.
