The future seems to be Full Frame sensors in all kind of bodies, from standard DSLRs, to compacts such as Sony RX1 and to mirrorless being planned by Panasonic and also perhaps Sony.

Canon's Masaya let the cat out of the bag when he said that semi-pros will go FF in near future.
"There will be a Canon EOS 70D, but the future of semi-pro DSLRs is probably full-frame, says Masaya Maeda" http://www.dpreview.com/articles/0336328811/cp-2013-interview-with-canons-masaya-maeda

The actual article says "that doesn't close the door on an EOS 70D though - when asked when we can expect one, Maeda promises: 'some day in the future. Without fail.'"

That is about as flimsy a commitment as he could have made. In fact, all it says is that at some unspecified date they will use the 70D model designation. I suspect that Canon and Nikon are planning to take FF down one more market slot. Nikon has the D400 name free and Canon could use 8D, 9D or even 11D. I'm not sure it would be a wise move for Panasonic, because then they would place themselves to compete from a position of weakness against Canon and Nikon. Just look how badly Sony has fared in full frame. Better to make the most of the format that they invented, and maximise its advantages with respect to size and convenience, which are intrinsic with respect to FF.
