What if the ball head is rated for 22 lbs, and the tripod more. Then you center the camera / lens combo, COG-wise. Now add weight & price requirements: 4 lbs is REALLY pushing it. And I cannot see spending $2000 on a lens setup (lens, collar, and teleconverter?). (How much better is image quality for the $$$, and how much can a APS-C camera benefit from a top-of-the-line lens? Topics for other message threads.)

Have a Gitzo GT2531 tripod. Certain that can handle an APS-C camera + telephoto lens, IF setup properly!

That Gitzo you have is already a very good tropod. But I once test my 70-200 2.8 with D700 on a 3 series with a laser pointer mounted on the hot shoes. The target was about 20 feet away and out of 10 shots, only 5 of them show no movement.
