A little birdie suggests that we will see a 56-megapixel Nikon D4x this year.

Well, such a camera may make sense (IMHO, 35mm can support up to 200MP) but I don't think a D4X would be in demand. For one thing because Nikon hasn't mastered yet all mechanical challenges it needs to for 36MP.

And then, this is only a linear increase in resolution of between 1% and 24%, depending on other factors. That's not enough to trigger interest, unlike the increase between a D3 and D3x when there was no "D800" alike alternative. For the same reason, I don't think Sony is looking into such a sensor.

So, I don't think that rumor or "birdie" sounds plausible.

I am curious to see what PDAF module Nikon will come up with to handle 56MP sensor. D800 persistent PDAF issues are not encouraging.
