Drobo vs. Hard Drive Backups via a Dock
Mar 20, 2013

Been using Drobos for the past few years to backup several terabytes of photos. They have done a reasonable job as long as you can live with their slow speed. Recently I had two separate hard drives fail on two different Drobo units. Will take several days to rebuild the data. Now that 4tb hard drives have come down in price (less than $200), I am considering a simpler backup option.

Each drobo is filled with four 2tb drives effectively giving me about 4tb of storage. Instead of using the Drobos, why not use two 4tb drives and alternate them as backup. They can be connected to my mac via any number of stand-alone docking stations.

Obviously there is no Drobo raid protection, however, by alternating the two backup drives, there is always some protection until the backup is restored. The alternative is to continue on with Drobo.

Any thoughts on the matter? Thanks.
