X10 vs X20 - Dynamic Range, raw & jpeg
Mar 20, 2013

These images were shot in L size RAW, with ISO100 and DR100, at 0EV. They were taken within a few seconds of each other.

The cameras are mounted together, X20 above X10, via a hotshoe to tripod mount. This displaces the X20 slightly to the right. They were pounted on a tripod but I did not think to turn off anti-shake.

X10 were processed with DSP5 and adjusted to suit. The overall exposure was reduced to -0.6EV

a) X10 RAW L images require much sharpening and increased contrast to get anywhere near the similar X20 image.

b) X10 L size RAW images show many artefacts.

First, X10:

Now for X20 - these were processed in RFC and are basically at default settings, apart from overall exposure at -0.2EV:

I have found it extremely difficult (actually impossibly) to match RAW colour output, especially blue skies, to the OOC JPEGs. Will keep looking into this.

Here are the matching SOOC JPEGs - first X10:

And here is the matching SOOC JPEG from the X20. Note that in-camera NR is set at -2:

In all cases focus was set on the first verandah post (on the right).

What do you think?

Note the difference in exposure, which is probably getting close to 0.3EV.
