This is correct.

However, there is a "poor mans" solution: simply put everything on automatic and set up your two flashes on either side of your subject, placing one flash the square root of two times as far away as the other. (The inverse square law applies here).

I think to do the "poor mans" solution you have to put everything on manual. Once you rely on TTL you do not have control over the power output of each flash. The end result you either use the trial and error method or invest in a flash meter.
