Thanks for correcting me. Of course I meant "pushing the shadows" compared to the rest of the curve, but your explanation is much more useful for understanding what happens.

Everyone thinks that sRGB uses Gamma 2.2 and in most calibration software you get that as a choice as well. Some software makes a distinction between Gamme "sRGB" and 2.2, albeit I don't know how 2.2 in one program compares to 2.2 in another as far as sRGB is concerned.
