Hosting my own videos a-la YouTube

I own my own domain with which I'd like to host some of the videos I've made. I've tried putting some video files of various formats and emailing people links to them, but somebody always complains that they can't view the file. YouTube doesn't seem to have this issue that I know of. I also like YouTube's ability to choose resolution and whether you view it full screen or not. Is it possible for me to roll my own? I'd use YouTube (and I have) except that I'm sometimes very unhappy with their re-compression of my work.
