Yeah, I don't know why Messier started with M1. Maybe he found it and said "ANOTHER #$*&#& nebula! That's it -- I'm cataloging these!" (Pardon my French).  It does have good surface brightness, small as it is.

Anyway, 1000 years ago, almost, it was bright enough to be a daytime object. So historically, not a bad place to start!
