If manual focus assist is on so you get an enlargement of a smaller portion of the screen, and you have the camera set up to stabilize the magnified screen (you have to half-press the shutter release and hold it to get the stabilized screen) for ease of manual focus and you still cannot manually focus, I'm not sure how you'll ever be able to manually focus with any other lens, or the subject you are trying to capture is just way too dark to focus with anything.
