well I've treid to illustrate what I would regard as a visible difference. Not that i would try to convince anyone to have my point of view but let me show you an example done today (raining and snowing in my area - so no fun going out photographing)

These two images have been done with the 300 f72.8 II and the 70-200 f/4.0 L IS USM at f/5.6 with Live view focussing and MLU and remote release with Av setting and shorter distance for the 70-200 at 200 mm to get the same framing.

the difference is really small between the two lenses at 2/3 image hight

there shouldn't be a difference and yes i know - we have copy to copy variations - my experience with the L lenses I own is that the more expensive ones have very little variation

Judge yourself and have a careful view

Just for the record - a 300 f/2.8 lens is normally used at f/2.8 and not at f/5.6
