Hi James,

This is quite normal since all lenses make noises when the aperture blades stop down. They close down to your selected aperture for DOF preview during focusing so it's quite noticeable.

Have a look at the size of the diaphragm between the 35mm and the zoom and take note of the amount of travel the blades have between the two - this will explain the difference in noise.
