how to take good wide or ultra wide portraits?

I find it much more tricky taking good portraits using normal/wide/ultra-wide focal length as opposed to long focal length, but I want to jump out of the dry subject isolation portraits with long focal length. The problem with wide portraits is that it's easy to get distortion, and thus make the subject ugly. Are there any rule of thumbs in making interesting perspectives using wide angle focal lengths?
