<snip> Could you see it by eye?
I could not even see it with a fine pair of binoculars. But I have to say that I thought it was to the right of it's location, so I spent most of my time looking in the wrong place. On the 12th I was pretty sure that I saw it with the naked eye, but wasn't sure until I looked at the images.
Sure didn't compare to Hale-Bopp which I was fortunate to see from the mountains near Santa Barbara, CA with a truly dark sky.
I am reminded of a comment by a fellow astronomer at the time of the now infamous Comet Kohoutek in 1973. "It met half of our expectations ... we said that it would be bright and it would be interesting. It was interesting." We are doing a little bit better this time, if for no other reason that it has not been hyped as the "comet of the century".
