Casio Exilim EX-S3 review
Jul 18, 2003

This is an extraordinarily small digital camera--certainly the thinnest digital camera that can take high quality pictures (>2 megapixel). Here's a brief listing of the pros and cons, but let me mention that overall, I am quite satisifed with this camera, despite some problems:

- Oustanding battery life.
- Really excellent, very large LCD screen.
- Very useful, powerful, and intuitive interface.
- Excellent physical construction.
- Amazingly small size.
- Movie quality and audio quality are quite good.
- Extremely fast shutter response time.
- Outstanding battery life.

- Fixed focus lens does not allow focusing of close objects (no macro mode).
- Small optics gathers little light, so exposure times can be long, which is prone to blurring.
- Small CCD results in high noise, especially in low light.
- No optical zoom.
- No really slim case designed specifically for the S3 available from Casio.

All told, the amazingly small size of this camera makes up for these defects, even though I really do miss having a macro lens. Having a camera this size really does change things--I keep it with me all the time, which would not be possible even with a camera just a bit thicker.

I've partially solved the macro-lens problem by carrying around a small magnifying lens matched to focus on a 9"x12" frame.

Be careful in low-light--either hold the camera very steady, or use the flash, or else the pictures will become blurred.
