Leica V-LUX 20 review
Aug 2, 2010

I brought my new Leica V-Lux 20 - a compact digital
superzoom with built-in GPS tagging - on a fly fishing trip
to remote Ontario in June. It seemed like a good place to
put this new little marvel to the test since we were going to
have to portage to get to our base camp, meaning - food
supplies and fishing gear (cough) had priority over heavy
camera gear.

First, the negatives; the Leica batteries don't last long so
take a stash with you, especially if the out-house lacks
charging power like ours did. The GPS tagging function
enthusiastically eats batteries so I had to turn that off for
the duration. One battery a day is about the norm. It's
macro abilities are also fiddly and may even be beyond
one's grasp without manual in hand. I struggled with
numerous disappointing 'macro moments' but when they
were successful they were stunning!

That said, I cannot think of a single other pressing negative
about this 12.1 effective megapixel wonder. I love this little
bugger! Two accessories I recommend for it are Gary Fong's
Delta Size 4 diffuser and Canon's PowerShot Camera Metal
Neck Strap.

Read the DP Review for all this Leica's technical attributes,
which are many. You know, stuff like: the V-Lux 20 features
12.1 megapixels, a Leica DC-Vario-Elmar 4.1-49.2mm f/3.3-
4.9 ASPH zoom lens with 12x optical zoom, built-in GPS
tagging, HD movie recording, integrated image stabilization,
a 3-inch TFT display with a resolution of 460,000 pixels,
face recognition, automatic scene modes, smart exposure,
and manual setting options for absolute creative
control...and more.

I thought I would share some images with you, instead.

Does the V-Lux 20 replace my professional Nikons? No, but
a comparable compact would be hard to find – at least I
haven't found one yet. –Dr. Ellen–

This compact is a beauty! I highly recommend...
