Among the best out there...
Nov 12, 2012

I will make this review as simple as possible. I will state the pros and cons of this camera over my previous HS10 and SX40 cameras. If you are looking for superzoom camera with real DSLR-like handling capability and ergonomics, you only have two choices, X-S1 and HS30. If budget is not a problem, get the X-S1 otherwise HS30 is your best bet.

PROS

- Better IQ, Dynamic Range.
- Smoother manual zoom and manual focus ring.
- Improved placement of built-in Flash
- Much faster AF.
- Much faster STS times, write times(especially on RAW+JPEG), shorter lag.
- Much better EVF and LCD.
- Real-time Intelligent zoom is now available unlike before where it shows useless box in HS10. Saves you time from cropping and interpolating.
- Intelligent sharpness seems to work well under certain conditions especially when pictures are pixel-peep.
- Longer battery life
- Cheap nowadays.
- Manual focus is still PITA to use but better than HS10.
- A lot better in video both in AF(faster and hunting is very minimal) and zooming. Snapshot while recording is nifty feature too.

CONS

- This is subjective but I find HS10 color better. With a little tweaking, you can get similar color reproduction in HS30 or HS20.
- Live-view is still not accurate on Manual and S-Mode.
- Manual focus is still PITA to use but better than HS10.

Compared to SX40

PROS

- Similar IQ
- Manual zoom (You can zoom-in and shoot 3+ seconds faster than any motorized zoom camera).
- Better ergonomics and handling
- Better and has more magnification in Macro.
- 58mm filters can be attached directly although you can buy $10 adapter for SX40.
- Much faster and more accurate AF.
- Much faster STS times, write times, shorter lag.
- Much better EVF and LCD size and resolution.
- For some swivel LCD is an advantage but for some titling is better and easier.
- This is subjective but Fuji is better than Canon in color reproduction.
- Native RAW support although you can have one in SX40 thru CHDK.

CONS

- SX40 optical zoom is an advantage for a very distant subject.
- Optical IS is better than Sensor-shift IS.
- For some swivel LCD is an advantage but for some titling is better and easier.
- More expensive
- SX40 video is better.
- SX40 Live-view is better and more accurate.
- CHDK would be a nice addition if only supported.
