Great quality, but too much power
Dec 20, 2012

I purchased Nikon D800 emotionally. Instead of really weighten all pro and cons, I just took it. First of all, I should say that it is great camera. I would event say - it is absolutely best camera at the moment IMO. It has great image quality: resolution, colors, dynamic range, hi-iso capabilities. BUT in most cases, I put the pictures on the web or print A4 (20x30 cm) format as maximum. Do I really need these 36 MP? Answer is - In most cases "No". 36 Mp is sometimes problem: 70 Mb raw files mean that I run out of memory very quickly. Post processing requires very quick and modern hardware. Most important things for the optimal performance here: RAM and the quickest HDD, CPU.
The advantage of big RAW file is obvious: you can crop tiny piece of the image and it is still ok to print.
Additional advantage of huge file resolution is oportunity for down-sampling. 36Mp file down-sampled to e.g. 16Mp will contain much less noice and much more details than the file from original 16 Mp sensor like Sony Nex5 or Nikon D7000.

As recap, this is excellent camera, but think carefully if you really need it. For professional landscape photographers - this is perfect camera. For other applications it is probably too good

For beginners, D800 is product to avoid (in my opinion).

Problems:

- Huge file size, problem to post-process and store.
- Requires top optics (I recommend VR) and skill in order to get its full advantage.
- Skin defects are too visible due to huge resolution.
