D300 upgraders is not a key market or a large enough one to make a success. If they just sell to the people who already have it and lose a few each generation, the thing dwindles, as it has done. If Nikon wants this camera to be a success, it would have to sell primarily to brand switchers and upgraders from the lower series cameras.

Since we are splitting hairs ...

By "D300 upgraders", do you mean D300 owners who want a direct "D300 follow-up", or D300 owners who will get "something else". Because of course a D300 owner who buys anything available because he is tired of waiting or because he wants something different or who does not have a desire for what made the D300 great will be lost to a possible D400.

By stretching things a little, if I am starving and the only available food is one I can't stomach, of course I will have to eat it, eventually. And if my preferred food became available after I was satiated, of course chances are I will have no room for it. Come to think of it, how did recent mad cow disease episodes happen?
