Since the registry stores copies of install files for any program installed for recovery purposes which is why a drive gets filled up over time.

Huh ?

Exactly.  This is bad info.  The registry is just a fairly small database and does not contain any additional files at all.

Run the Disk Clean tool built into Windows, and you have many options save space.  Click the button in the tool to "Clean up system files" and you have even more options.

The Add/Remove programs in Control Panel is you other most powerful tool to clean you system.  Uninstall the apps and junkware you don't use.
