New 80 - 400 could make the 200 - 400 a bit of a dinosaur
In reply to PHXAZCRAIG, Mar 14, 2013

The new 80 - 400 could make the 200 - 400 a bit of a dinosaur which would be a shame since I have the 200 - 400 VRII. Consider this:

80 - 400 Pros - wider range, light weigh, VRIII, price

200 - 400 Pros - constant f/4, known optical quality but some minor issues past 100m, and er....

Since the optical quality of the new 80 - 400 is, as yet, unproven in the field it has a good chance of displacing the 200 - 400. The benefit of a constant f/4 is worth it to me as I shoot manual a lot at fixed ISO. I suffer from white painted racing cars at that point but this exposure set-up does allow me to control for cars with or without lights. Everything's a compromise and practise makes perfect, blah, blah, blah. I'll look into the new 80 - 400 in a few months or so onc all the excitement has died down as a more discrete and lighter lens is often worth having.
