Yes, long exposure NR uses a technique called dark frame subtraction. The camera takes the picture, then closes the shutter and takes a second picture with the same exposure which is then used to subtract some of the sensor noise.

Note also that this picture was taken within 20 miles of NY City, where light pollution is very bad. The original image only shows a handful of star trails, but I used the levels adjustment in PS to darken the sky, revealing many more that are completely invisible to the naked eye. The fact that this image held up after enhancing the contrast to such an extreme is a testament to the excellent low noise performance of this sensor (and the great in-camera processing, I suppose).
