I am just amazed at how tiny the front of the DP2M lens is. It looks like a giant cell phone. How did Sigma get an APS-C lens so small up in the front? The glass element is so tiny, that the rest of the lens seems excessive. Why is the diamter of the lens so much larger than the lens element.

Isn't this the price we pay for wanting AF lenses? The MF lenses that I've used (and still use) are a lot smaller. Modern AF lenses have to accommodate some kind of motor and gearing I suppose, so the whole thing becomes quite unrelated to the size of the lens itself. As for the size of the front element, I leave that to the designers. Who cares, as long as the results are OK.
