Upgrade to Aperture and your Star Ratings will work! I LOVE Aperture! It is a great piece of software and works VERY well with iPhoto! I promise you will not be disappointed.
Like anything these days, you need a newer machine with lots of Ram. Aperture also uses the GPU so a fast graphics card will speed things up too! Good Luck!
