Just to echo the other posters.  I bought the cheap f2.8 Tamron to go with my D800 because I did not really know if I needed this range and the Nikon is very expensive.  I tend to use it in the studio so f5.6 or f8.0 is the normal aperture.  It works very well.  I bought mine new recently with built in motor and it focuses pretty quickly if a little noisily.  It is useable wide open but certainly the edges are softer.
